Recumbent Exercise Bicycles

Recumbent Tricycle Knowledge Base

Thinking about buying a recumbent tricycle? Actually, I am "considering about thinking about" buying a recumbent tricycle. To be honest, I know absolutely nothing about it ( not even sure if that is how you call that type of bike) except for its brilliant style. So any suggestions? Maybe prices and brand recommendations?
How do I select/specify a recumbent bicycle/tricycle the first time/? I am mulling the idea of switching to recumbent bicycle/tricycle, but have little knowledge on the selection/specification for it. Sellers seems as lost about it
Where can I purchase a recumbent tricycle with suspension for a reasonable price? I am hoping someone makes one for 500-1000 bucks. I listed this question before and didn't get any responses - it was deleted because I asked about an "adult" trike! Yahoo censorship rocks!
can anyone recommend a good and cheap recumbent tricycle? looking to purchase one for myself and my son. any ideas?
Is there a recumbent tricycle with leg extension (not rotary) pedals? From Taiwan. Thanks? Pedals just go in and out, back and forth, not round and round like normal pedals
Anyone know where or who I can get a carbon fibre recumbent trike from? I'm after a high end carbon fibre recumbent tricycle, preferably one that's pre-fabricated to fit most people (rather than a custom built frame). More specifically, I'm after something from a major recumbent manufacturer built out of a standardized factory line on a mass scale: Shimano Ultegra parts, Flight Deck changers, the works. Names are good, links and references are better, and contact details would be the most helpful. Thanks everyone, Buzz
Question about Recumbent Tricycles? I have a friend who is considering betting an adult tricycle. Are they safe in traffic? They look ridiculous. And hard on the back Has anyone had experience with them?
A survey about recumbent bicycles/tricycles. Recumbent owners and regular cyclists welcome to answer. Thanks? This survey will help me with my senior project assignment by allowing me to better understand what people think of recumbents. Short and long answers welcome. Recumbent owners, regular bicycle owners, and non-cyclists welcome--any imput helps, and please be 100% honest, even if it is negative. Survey--- Subject: Recumbent Bicycle/Tricycle vs. Average Upright Bicycle Confused on what a recumbent bicycle is? A recumbent bicycle is defined as a bicycle that places the rider in a laid-back reclining position. This type of bicycle can be lower than the average bike, and the rider’s weight is distributed comfortably over several square feet of the back and buttocks, rather than on an upright bicycle, where the weight rests on the sit bones, feet, and hands. - Have you ever seen a recumbent bicycle or tricycle before? - Have you ever riden one? If not, would you like to ride one? Why or why not? - Have you seen a person riding one? What was your impression of that person? - What do you think would be some of the benefits and downfalls of this bike?
I'm interested in recumbent trikes. Can anyone satisfy my curiosities first? Since I first saw the curious design of tadpole-layout recumbent tricycles, my interest has been piqued. I would like to know a few things about these interesting machines: 1. How much is the most affordable adult-sized tadpole recumbent trike? 2. How does one steer a recumbent trike, with two wheels up front? 3. Can recumbent tadpole trikes be steered and/or stopped with one hand safely? 4. How difficult are they to use? 5. On multigear models, how is shifting achieved? 6. How do I maximize their safety on the road? 7. Can they be parked like regular bikes at a rack? If you have one of these and use it regularly, or have used one once, please elaborate on the riding experience. I want to know if it's something I'd want to commit to.
Little old lady seeks advice regarding choice of recumbent tricycles.? I went to the bike shop and test drove a few. The very knowledgeble salesman thinks I will be happiest with a Sun EZ3 AX. Looking over the catalogue tonight I see that it has 27 speeds. This seems like overkill for a little old lady who has no desire to race or even ride fast (or far). In addition I'd like something low maintainance. What are your thoughts? ADD-One passed me going down the wrong side of the road while I was stopped in traffic. It was scary. I'll make sure people see me coming and I'll ride during the times when there is the least traffic to contend with. I have fibromyalgia. The traditional bike stresses my neck and shoulder muscles and takes all the fun out of riding. Balance is an issue for the same reason. Having the single wheel in front gave the trike a tighter turning radius. I would love to get a bench across the back for my Standard Poodle. It wasn't at all clear from the illustration just how that would work.
Why are recumbent bicycles and tricycles so unpopular relative to upright bikes and trikes? Bents are more comfortable, faster, easier to ride, easier to repair, and if they were mass produced in equal volume to upright bikes they would be cheaper too, so what's the deal? thank you to the first 3 answerers. logical and simple explanations like that as answers to all questions here would make Y!A a much more informative and educational experience. Firstly, I agree offroad, freeride, stunt, downhill, and densely urban areas being unsuitable for a bent bike. No contest whatsoever. However, most of the cyclists I know use a bike for one of 3 reasons most of the time: commuting between places too far for walking, yet too close or inconvenient for driving; cruising around like a tourist, just for the joy of travelling; or for the transportation of small objects, like cycle couriers. For those commuting, most will beeline for the nearest major highway on an upright road bike, spend 30 minutes on the cycleway, navigate a few backstreets, and they're home. For those cruising, being in a comfortable seating position, where you don't need to hold yuor head in a craned position to see ... And the carrying capacity for couriers ... All would be perfect for a bent. All good answers. I mean ALL! How can I possibly choose? I think I'll leave this 1 to the voters, despite the loss of points. Thanks to everyone!
Does a pedometer measure distance/activity when I use my Trikke three-wheeled scooter? Does a pedometer measure distance/activity when I use my Trikke tri-wheeled scooter? I'm looking for an inexpensive way to measure my "progress" on my new three wheeled scooter used for fitness. It's upright like a Razor/Trikke...NOT the recumbent or reclining three wheeled adult tricycles. Any suggestions?

Should bicycle riders have to license their bike and have liability insurance? For the safety and financial security of all road users Cycle Riders (Bicycle, Tricycle and Recumbent) should be required to be licensed road users with liability insurance, vehicle registration, and a state issued license plate affixed to the cycle. Cyclists having no license, current plate, registration or not having insurance would incur the same penalty as a motor vehicle driver. The roads would be safer and road usage would be fair. Some tricycles are large and not childrens toys. Last century bicycles were licensed where I grew up. A woman here in this town was hit by a high speed cycle rider without insurance a year ago and she is still having surgeries and medical bills. Cyclists often ignore or just don't know the rules of the road. The State needs safe roads for all users. The fee revenue would be of use to the State as well. Riders under the age of 18 would be exempt.
Parents of children with disabilities, What kind of bike does your child ride? My son who is 9 cannot ride a two wheeler. He is afraid of it even with training wheels and at this point, he is embarrassed to try. I was looking online at getting his 4 yr old a bike and my 9 yr old said to me I wish I was small so I could ride a bike and it broke my heart. He is mildly autistic, ADD, has cognitive impairments, dyspraxia (coordination and balance issues) and proprioceptive sensory issues too. Can anyone recommend a recumbent bike that does not look like an oversized tricycle, is reasonably priced, works well for these kids? I was liking the triton pro, it costs 350 dollars. It's a lot of money to us. If it works as well as it seems to in the videos I have no doubt its a good investment. Also, we have another son the 4 yr old who has mild CP and potentially may never ride a 2 wheeler either. Does anyone own one? Does it really accommodate kids 4 ft.-6'3" and 250lbs? Can other kids with similar issues ride a 2 wheeler? When did they begin?
Bike for child with disabilities? Hi, can anyone out there recommend a reasonably priced recumbent bike (trike) that does not look like an oversized tricycle or especially made for those that are handicapped? I like the look of the triton pro. Does it really work well for heights of 4 ft-6ft 3 inches? Can anyone recommend where to get one that's not 350 dollars? I've got a 9 yr old mildly autistic son with mild cognitive impairments, low muscle tone, ADD, and dypraxia (balance and coordination issues) Does anyone out there have a child like this who did end up riding a 2 wheeler? My son wants a bike, he has one but is afraid of it. It's a 20" regular bike with training wheels. He told me he wished he was small so he could ride a bike and my heart broke.
What is the best 3 wheel play scooter for my son? My son is going to be 5 soon and I wanted to get him a three wheel scooter because he doesn't have the balance yet for a two wheeler and has trouble pedaling a bike. He has some physical challenges but can stand, walk, run and climb. He has good balance but isn't ready for anything 2 wheeled. He's too big for a regular tricycle or a preschool type scooter. Do they have 3 wheel recumbent trikes for kids that have velcro straps on the pedals? See, he can pedal but has trouble keeping his feet on the pedals. If he had straps on the pedals I think he could do a recumbent trike but I don't know if they make those for kids. Any suggestions? He's about as big as most 6 year olds I know already so I don't feel right getting him anything made for a preschooler.
How could I build a backyard track? I have a fairly large backyard and I want to build a small track along the inside perimeter of a privacy fence. The purpose would be to allow my daughter a safe place to roller skate, for smaller kids to ride tricycles, and for an adult to do laps on a recumbent bike in privacy (I shattered my ankle a few years ago and I'd like to get some exercise outdoors without the neighbors watching because I feel a bit silly). So, I'd prefer something a bit more smooth than dirt...perhaps a tar track? Is that even what they're called? I can't find anything on the internet (probably because I have no idea what to look for), and I'm not even sure of the materials used to make tracks. Any ideas?
Eggbeaters and tricycles? Hello, I'm looking at going clipless on my adult recumbent trike (A Sun EZ-3). Eggbeaters were recommended. And, after looking at the pedals on thier site, I'm interested in the "Candy" pedals. http://www.crankbrothers.com/candy_c.php Has anybody ever used "Candies" before? Are there any trikers here who've gone clipless? Thanks, Cullen
Bike for child with disabilities? Can anyone recommend a bike for a 9 yr old who has disabilities? I am looking for a recumbent bike and like the look of the triton pro. Does anyone have one? Is it easy to maneuver? Where to get it for under 350 dollars? My son is 9 and cannot ride a two wheeler without training wheels. At this point he is embarrassed to try. He told me that he wished he was small so he could ride a bike and it broke my heart. I want one that does not look like an oversized tricycle or especially made for disabilities. He has mild autism, cognitive impairments, ADD, and coordination and balance issues Do you know of any child that can with these issues ride a 2 wheeler? or think he will ever ride a 2 wheeler? WE sign up for losethetrainingwheels.com bike training camp every year. Twice, it was full because the county its in gets first dibs and there is no room. Last year due to budget cuts they didn't even come to our state.
