Recumbent Trike Knowledge Base
I want to build a DIY recumbent trike. Am I being realistic? I've found several sites offering plans for around $20 to build a recumbent bike or trike. These projects supposedly rely entirely on off-the-shelf parts and common tools, except for the need to bend and braze frame parts. I'm not a fantastically mechanically inclined person. Am I setting the bar too high with this project? Are the plans any good? Anyone have experience with this type of project?
Why is my recumbent trike wheel noisy? I have a recumbent trike (an ActionBent Tadpole) and the right front wheel makes noise like there was a playing card hitting the spokes. I thought it was the brake making contact on the disc brake, but I don't think so now after playing with the brake. It increases in volume when I'm turning left and decreases/silences when I'm pulling right. What is the cause of this? Well, thanks for answers! Unfortunately, I won't be needing them right now. I wrecked the trike yesterday on the way home (due to my own carelessness, not any lack of safety of the trike or trikes in general). Anyways, I landed pretty hard on that wheel as I rolled around, so the earlier noise isn't going to be an issue. Unfortunately, leaving me without a ride for Ride Your Bike To Work Day today, but...
Anyone know where or who I can get a carbon fibre recumbent trike from? I'm after a high end carbon fibre recumbent tricycle, preferably one that's pre-fabricated to fit most people (rather than a custom built frame). More specifically, I'm after something from a major recumbent manufacturer built out of a standardized factory line on a mass scale: Shimano Ultegra parts, Flight Deck changers, the works. Names are good, links and references are better, and contact details would be the most helpful. Thanks everyone, Buzz
Car mount for recumbent trike? I'm looking for a way to mount my Sun EZ recumbent trike on my car (a Saturn Sedan) so I can go on bike trips. It has one wheel in front and two in the back. It is approx 47 inches long and 29 inches wide at it's widest dimension (the rear where the 2 wheels). It weighs about 50#. I've found specialty mounts and hitches that cost $300 and up, but I'd like to find something in the $100 or less range. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
is there some kind of ratchet that can be used on a recumbent trike so that 1 pedal can flip back? im doing a project for my mechanical engineering project, and it's to redesign this recumbent trike for paraplegics where they use electrode stimulation to allow their leg muscles to move so they can get exercise. as the design stands, it is quite awkward for them to get their legs into the pedals as one leg is further away than the other. i thought that their may be some type of ratchet system that would allow the far away pedal to flip back 180 degrees, this way both pedals would be as close as possible hence making the operation a lot easier. any suggestions would be much appreciated!
Recumbent Trike Suggestion? I am looking to purchase a recumbent trike. I have a Sun delta, but would prefer a tadpole. I am a casual rider, and am looking for a trike in the $1500 range. I am mostly interested in commuting and touring. I have seen the WizWheelz TerraTrike Cruiser and the ActionBent. What are your opinions of these two trikes? Which would you recommend? Would you recommend a different one altogether?
Recumbent trike fenders? Hello, I'm the happy owner of a Greenspeed Recumbent trike. I'd like to make this my main and, possibly, only mode of transportation. Because of this, I'd like to get it equipped with permanent fender. Are there any fellow trikesters (my corny, made up term) here that have them? If so, please share?
How to form an adult trike club? I'm interested in forming a cycling club.To be more specific, since I now ride a recumbent trike, I'd like to form an adult trike club. Do any readers have any experience with cycling clubs. Do you think there'd be enough tricyclists to make such a venture successful? In other words, have you noticed an increase in prople riding these strange, 3-wheeled bicycles?
Why should I NOT buy a Sun Recumbent Tadpole or USX? I want a recumbent trike. I am not wealthy. I test rode a Sun Tadpole & a Sun usx. It was fun, but things just did not seems to work as great as I would expect them to. I am pretty illiterate when it comes to talk about bike components. Please share your opinions on Sun recumbents &/or make other suggestions that won't break the bank. I am a casual rider looking for a comfortable trike.
Any recumbent trike owners out there.(home built,or not)? If any homemade where did you get parts. Like front wheels, hubs, brake system, design plans, and cost of parts, or whole thing. I want to build one myself, but can't afford two grand, I know about ihpva. Thanks for all answers..
recumbent trike race help? part of my school is going to the RACV energy breakthrough and that makes me wonder: how long is the course and is it hard or is there anyone who has been there with some tips please
I'm interested in recumbent trikes. Can anyone satisfy my curiosities first? Since I first saw the curious design of tadpole-layout recumbent tricycles, my interest has been piqued. I would like to know a few things about these interesting machines: 1. How much is the most affordable adult-sized tadpole recumbent trike? 2. How does one steer a recumbent trike, with two wheels up front? 3. Can recumbent tadpole trikes be steered and/or stopped with one hand safely? 4. How difficult are they to use? 5. On multigear models, how is shifting achieved? 6. How do I maximize their safety on the road? 7. Can they be parked like regular bikes at a rack? If you have one of these and use it regularly, or have used one once, please elaborate on the riding experience. I want to know if it's something I'd want to commit to.
How well made are Trailmate Meteor trikes? This is a rehash of a 3-year-old question--similar but not quite the same-- I am going to purchase a recumbent trike for under $1000, so far I am looking at either a Sun EZ 3 recumbent trike or a Trailmate Meteor. I have read good things about the Sun but can find nothing on the Meteor. Any opinions on either would help in my decision.
truth or fiction about recumbent trikes? My husband and I are looking into buying some bicycles for this spring/summer, I came across an article on how recumbent trikes are better for ppl with back problems (both of us have them). So I went to a local bike shop and the guy told me that there would be no point in a recumbent because you CANNOT go uphill at all. You can only ride them on flat paths. We live in tennessee there is no such thing as flat, theres barely a such thing as bike paths the guy also said that I wouldnt be able to pull my daughter behind me on a recumbent. Is all that true? I cant imagine ppl spending thousands on a bike they can only ride on a flat surface, dont get me wrong Im no going to try and go in the mountains with it, but a hill should be accomplishable. And do I have to spend 2,000 a piece on recumbents? I wouldnt mind after awhile but just to try it out that price seems steep.
A recumbent triker w/ shaved legs! WHAT!?!? Hello, I an avid cyclist that rides, at least, 20 miles a day. In 2000, I was hit by a pickup truck while cycling in Milwaukee. The accident put me into a coma for two-weeks,Unfortunately, I now have a minor case of head trauma and rely on walker, I'm still an avid cyclist though. I've discovered the recumbent trike. Even though I'm a recumbent tricyclist, I still shave my legs. Do you find this weird?
Which Products do You Wish were Available for Recumbent Bicycles & Recumbent Cyclists? Hello, This question pertains to any type of recumbent bicycle or recumbent cyclist: "traditional," high-racer, low-racer, trike, and so on. The products you would like to see could include those for the recumbent bike itself, or for the rider, such as special clothing or protection. The items could pertain to just riding for fun, touring, or commuting. Specifically, I would like to hear of items for recumbents'cyclists that are not available, or existing items that should be improved. Thank you, CycleMan
Who can tell me if this is legal on the road please? I have a trike with a rather large flagpole, if i put 4 lights on it, 2 blue and 2 white so that i can be sure to be seen by traffic behind me is that legal. I already have front and a rear red light but being low down on my recumbent trike often makes me feel i need to be more secure at night if i am cycle touring. The lights are small and meant for the wrist but would fit on my flagpole and they really stand out very bright.
Can recumbent bikes fit on bus bike racks? (In Seattle)? I'm really wondering pretty specifically, if short-wheelbase recumbent bikes will fit on Metro and Community Transit (and I guess Sound Transit) bike racks on those buses in the Seattle area. I have a trike that I know won't, the long-wheelbase bikes seem like they'd obviously not fit, but the short-wheelbase ones appear as though they might. If anyone has any experience with this and whether Metro and Community Transit will allow these on their racks, I'd appreciate it.
Wired cycle computer - which is best? I have a recumbent trike and it is already fitted with a wired computer holder. As I can't find any branding on it I will have to buy a new one. Because of the distance between the holder and the rear wheel, a wireless computer is no good. Can anyone recommend a reliable *wired* cycle computer that will display current, average and top speed and odometer? Also, does anyone have any opinion on VDO computers?
which is better, recumbent or upright bikes? I was wondering what type of bike is better for touring, recumbent or upright, and with recumbent, would 2 wheeler bike work, or a trike, and which kind of trike, tadpole, or delta. the ones that have answered my questions already sorry about the questions lately about bike touring, rather than finding about it myself, I like opinions from other people, i think opinions from other people are better than experts telling which is better, because the ones that answer might have one and they tell it first hand, and some experts just study it to get an answer. but thanks jak better, how much more can i explain it, like more comfortable, BETTER for carrying cargo on long trips, or maybe you don't understand the concept of touring, like going long distances, like biking 100's if not 1000's of miles on bike. what is more confortable and what is better for carrying cargo for biking to alaska? jak
Could you recommend an on-line seller/maker of 3-wheeled bicyles? I've found a couple of companies and except for Schwinn, I am not familiar with them (the Schwinn one seems to be out of stock everywhere). I am interested in the adult trike kind, with a roomy basket in the rear to commute to work, not in the recumbent styled ones. Thanks! Links and personal shopping experience would be great!
why is it so many recumbent riders in houston tx choose to go slow when they don't have to? I speed like a demon on my bents passing all the regular riders up,I wish my fellow bent riders would speed up too, then maybe the wiseacre regular cylclists will quit puttin bents down,(not all the other bent riders in hoston are guilty of slow go ,but TOO many are) SPEED IT UP!!!!(I have gone over 35mph on a flat on a semifaired bent bike, over 40mph on a flat in a semifaired trike, and over 55mphdownhill in a totaly faired trike) I FEEL THE NEED,THE NEED FOR SPEEEEDDDD!!! I said fast not unsafe,if more people could see recumbents can seriously compete with cars for speed, less car driving, less polution, vince you miss the point ENTIRELY!!!!!
Eggbeaters and tricycles? Hello, I'm looking at going clipless on my adult recumbent trike (A Sun EZ-3). Eggbeaters were recommended. And, after looking at the pedals on thier site, I'm interested in the "Candy" pedals. http://www.crankbrothers.com/candy_c.php Has anybody ever used "Candies" before? Are there any trikers here who've gone clipless? Thanks, Cullen
What is the best 3 wheel play scooter for my son? My son is going to be 5 soon and I wanted to get him a three wheel scooter because he doesn't have the balance yet for a two wheeler and has trouble pedaling a bike. He has some physical challenges but can stand, walk, run and climb. He has good balance but isn't ready for anything 2 wheeled. He's too big for a regular tricycle or a preschool type scooter. Do they have 3 wheel recumbent trikes for kids that have velcro straps on the pedals? See, he can pedal but has trouble keeping his feet on the pedals. If he had straps on the pedals I think he could do a recumbent trike but I don't know if they make those for kids. Any suggestions? He's about as big as most 6 year olds I know already so I don't feel right getting him anything made for a preschooler.
Which side of the traffic lane should you ride? Today a fellow in a van honked me quite a way back in the traffic in london, he said why don't you keep to the right so you can be seen. I was on my 3 wheeled recumbent trike, i replied if i do that the speedos honk me to get out of the way, if i go into the central lane the lorries honk me because they want to pass and if i go into the bus lane the buses honk me for not going fast enough. Daft isn't it, more so when i am told it's now safer to cycle in london. The trouble is i am seen because i have a large flag on my bike and never need to worry about the lorries at stops as i keep away from them. So why can't people mind their own business, more so as the fellow actually opened his door without looking and i thought for a moment he was going to lose his door. Do you get people reacting too much over too little on the road when you cycle
Why are recumbent bicycles and tricycles so unpopular relative to upright bikes and trikes? Bents are more comfortable, faster, easier to ride, easier to repair, and if they were mass produced in equal volume to upright bikes they would be cheaper too, so what's the deal? thank you to the first 3 answerers. logical and simple explanations like that as answers to all questions here would make Y!A a much more informative and educational experience. Firstly, I agree offroad, freeride, stunt, downhill, and densely urban areas being unsuitable for a bent bike. No contest whatsoever. However, most of the cyclists I know use a bike for one of 3 reasons most of the time: commuting between places too far for walking, yet too close or inconvenient for driving; cruising around like a tourist, just for the joy of travelling; or for the transportation of small objects, like cycle couriers. For those commuting, most will beeline for the nearest major highway on an upright road bike, spend 30 minutes on the cycleway, navigate a few backstreets, and they're home. For those cruising, being in a comfortable seating position, where you don't need to hold yuor head in a craned position to see ... And the carrying capacity for couriers ... All would be perfect for a bent. All good answers. I mean ALL! How can I possibly choose? I think I'll leave this 1 to the voters, despite the loss of points. Thanks to everyone!

Which recumbent bike to buy? Not interested in a trike. I have been looking at the easy sports LE, a few lesser ones for around $500 shipped (and 33ish lbs) Also looking at Bachetta's Corsa (price hurts +tax--so would have to stalk for it used) and the carbon aero (found it for a little under 5K...which is a fantasy and over kill for me) Accessories I want are a fairing, body sock, rack, bottle holder I am also considering getting an electric conversion kit, still trying to pick the right battery though. Anyways speed/racing isn't my main concern. Want comfort/durability/reliability.
Bike for child with disabilities? Hi, can anyone out there recommend a reasonably priced recumbent bike (trike) that does not look like an oversized tricycle or especially made for those that are handicapped? I like the look of the triton pro. Does it really work well for heights of 4 ft-6ft 3 inches? Can anyone recommend where to get one that's not 350 dollars? I've got a 9 yr old mildly autistic son with mild cognitive impairments, low muscle tone, ADD, and dypraxia (balance and coordination issues) Does anyone out there have a child like this who did end up riding a 2 wheeler? My son wants a bike, he has one but is afraid of it. It's a 20" regular bike with training wheels. He told me he wished he was small so he could ride a bike and my heart broke.

So I'm not sure about the whole balancing on two wheels thing. Are there other good trikes (sitting or recumbent) to look at also? (I don't want to spend over $300).
