Recumbent Exercise Bicycles

Recumbent exercise bike calorie readout wrong?

I bought a pretty nice recumbent bike for exercise of course. My goal has been 500c-1,000c a day ( yea intense I know ) I did a test at 5 minutes going at 15mph on a friends upright bike and got 82.5c burnt. With my bike, I only burn 109c per 10 minutes at above 15mph ( very vigorous ) So here I am, heart pounding, sweating to death after 20 minutes of 18mph. only 250c burnt I checked online calcs and for a readout it would be 990c calories burned per hour... For the sake of my health and so I don't push myself too hard, does anybody know an approx amount of calories burned on a recumbent exercise bike? ... ( stats = 6' 190lb very intense intense workout ) also note, the bike's calories do not change with resistence settings... if the readout is correct its very demoralizing

  1. I don't think any machines have completely accurate readings, it just gives you a rough idea. "For the sake of your health", you should go by how you feel, not the readings. If you can't handle such vigorous exercise, you need to tone it down a notch, or you'll really hurt yourself. You don't need calorie read-outs to tell you what you can handle, just go to the edge of pain, and then back off. Don't overdo it, don't underdo it, and you can tell if you are overdoing it or not pushing yourself enough.
