Has anyone tried to crochet while riding a stationary exercise bike?
If so, was it an upright or recumbent bike? I am looking to find an exercise activity I can incorporate with this sedentary hobby of mine.

- Well, I haven't tried it myself... But I do crochet & I have rode on an upright stationary bike... I'd imagine it wouldn't be too difficult so long as you're going a slow & steady pace. I'd think it'd be a lot more difficult to do it on a recumbent bike, though. That may just be my opinion...
- If you're exercising at such a slow pace that you can crochet at the same time, your exercise program is not strenuous enough to do you much good.
- I think it wouldn't work. You'd be looking down the whole time while on the bike and that probably wouldn't be very good for your back while exercising.
- One thing at a time grasshopper...
- Why would you want to crochet while exercising? Crochet is a relaxing hobby...done sitting down. I watch TV while I am exercising..seems to make time fly faster.
- I've done many miles on a recumbent while crocheting or knitting and watching TV. Can you say multitasking? LOL
- Okay, I know that I am nuts...but yes I have crocheted while on my exercise bike. It is quite simple, you need a pattern that is easy for you to do, something you do not need to look at. It also needs to be small. I like to do granny squares or mile-a-minute strips. It really helps to pass the time. I am a track coach and know the importance of exercise, but hate to be indoors. I find the exercise bike very boring and it really helps. I have figured out the faster I peddle, the faster I crochet! That is why it is best to keep it simple. Oh, by the way, mine is an upright bike. Now, if I could just figure out how to jog and crochet at the same time....
- I have not crocheted on a bicycle, but I have crocheted while walking on the treadmill. It does take practice and concentration. I imagine I could do it on a stationary bike. The question is where to put the yarn. On the tread I used a hanging cotton bag with a hole at the bottom so I put the skein in there and the center pull coming out of the hole in the bottom. It works just fine. You can see a photo of the bag I have here: http://pic16.picturetrail.com/VOL698/3565315/16528888/263278128.jpg Good luck!
- I think if you look in a health specialty catalogue you may find a little creation that you put your feet on and pedal as you are sitting in a chair. That may work better than actually riding either type of exercise bike. My mother once had one of those little pedal machines..... she did it for exercise as she also was an avid crocheter and needleworker. I did see something at Staples that was intended for rocking of the feet/legs while on a computer. It wasn't expensive, if I recall correctly it was under $20 and that would also be useful for some exercise and keeping your circulation going in your lower extremeties. Good for you for looking for something so beneficial to your health! All the best, Doris WithWingsofAngels@comcast.net
- I haven't crocheted on a stationary bike but I have knit socks while on one...I have both the straight up stationary bike and a stair master that I use often while knitting! I get my socks done faster and exercise at the same time. So I don't feel quilty about spending so much time knitting and relaxing and get my exercise at the same time
- I knit on the treadmill. Why, cause it is mind numbingly boring, not even music or TV can make this any fun, so I need something to take my eyes off that timer. I find it easiest to knit on the recumbent bike at the gym, I assume the same rules apply as with kntting. Make sure the pattern does not involve any special counting, I like to do something small, like a dish cloth. For crochet I would do hot pads or something like that. Something that you do not need a pattern for. I put the yarn in the cup holder, dangling it on your arm just gets in the way. Make sure to keep your tension loose, and most important of all don't bend over to pick up the hook when you drop it.
